Throughout 2010 Volunteering Tasmania has been working with three schools in each region of the State on a pilot to encourage more young people in to volunteering. VT staff gave a series of preparation sessions to students before they started their volunteer roles whilst also working with organisations local to the school to develop fun and meaningful roles for the young people.
In the North, three volunteer roles were developed for students from Brooks High School in Rocherlea: 1) Social activities including dominoes, Wii computer games, bridge and singsong with residents at Aldersgate Village; 2) Fashion and retail duties at the ‘Shed Your Clothes’ Op Shop at the Northern Suburbs Community Centre, and 3) Child Care at the Li Lea Pad Centre.
The following short film shows the experiences of the Brooks High School students during the pilot. We hope the film inspires other young people to try volunteering, and get an idea of how varying and fun different voluntary roles could be. We also hope volunteer-involving organisations will consider taking on more young people as volunteers, or accessing the services at Volunteering Tasmania to help them achieve this.
Volunteering Tasmania was incredibly fortunate to have the support of a film maker, Saber Bora Ramadan, a film student at the Polytechnic in Launceston. Without his immense effort and generous time dedicated to the creation and editing of the film, it would not have been possible.
Volunteering Tasmania would also like to thank all the organisations involved, and also to Brooks High School.
