International Volunteers Day
Ceremony says thanks to helpers
A CEREMONY to thank some of Tasmania's many volunteers was held in Launceston last night. The ceremony, hosted by Liberal Senator Guy Barnett, was to acknowledge the importance of volunteers in Tasmania as a build up to International Volunteer Day. "Tasmania has a strong participation rate when it comes to volunteering, with over 175,000 volunteers and more than 4700 volunteer organisations operating in the state," Senator Barnett said. Hadspen Friends, a befriending service for older people in the community, is run with the help of volunteers. Coordinator Lee Turner said her group of volunteers were an enthusiastic bunch. "We wouldn't be able to run the day centre without them," Ms Turner said. Ms Turner said receiving a thank you was appreciated but not the reason she did the work. "We need to give pats on backs," she said. Janet Warrington has been volunteering for the outreach service for the past six months. "I love working with the older people and being able to give back to society," Mrs Warrington said."They gave to us, so we have to return something back to them. "Sonja D'Alessandro is a committee member of the Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill. The association is a first contact group for people who have been affected by mental illness in some way. "Our logo is you are not alone, it is a place were people can feel safe," Mrs D'Alessandro said. "Being a volunteer is so rewarding – I think if you can make the difference to one
person you have achieved something marvellous."

Volunteering Changes Lives
Volunteering changes lives and invigorates communities. Every day in many ways volunteers touch and change our lives in positive ways. Volunteering in Tasmania is in decline and yet communities are more in need of volunteers than ever before. Volunteering Tasmania is responding to this by creating a new service based at the Huon LINC in Huonville. Volunteer Connect offers local people a chance to create and access their own pathways to volunteering. Volunteer Connect enables organisations to proactively recruit more volunteers. It creates a greater awareness of all the opportunities in the local area. The first Volunteer Connect site was launched at the Huon LINC on Monday, 16 November. If you want more information about how you can become involved, contact Volunteering Tasmania on admin@volunteeringtas.org.au or 6231 5550.

Celebrating Tassie Volunteers
VOLUNTEERS will be the focus of the inaugural Celebrate Tasmania Day on November 8. Premier David Bartlett made the announcement yesterday after taking part in the 25th Skilled Burnie Ten. He said more than 80 community organisations would host events to celebrate Tasmania's unique culture and identity. An advertising and promotion campaign started last night to help promote the festivities on November 8. "Celebrate Tasmania Day will be an annual day dedicated to volunteerism in our state," Mr Bartlett said. The government has combined with Volunteering Tasmania to support the campaign, which includes television, radio and press advertising together with merchandising and promotional material. A website will also provide information about local events and how to get involved in volunteering. Separate grants have also been provided to service clubs to run activities as well as funding for combined events. "The day is all about celebrating the Tasmanian way of life and promoting awareness and participation in volunteering," Mr Bartlett said.
