Volunteering Tasmania plays a vital role in researching and developing policy that promotes a safe, satisfying and stimulating volunteering community.

Developing policies on volunteering issues, representing the volunteering sector to all levels of government, engaging in advocacy on behalf of the sector, and conducting community consultation and research are critical aspects of VT’s work.

Discussion paper by The Department of Health and Human Services seeking comment on the establishment of a centralised system for checking those who work with children and other vulnerable people. VT’s response is included on this linked web site.

vt response to tasmania together 10 year review

The Tasmania Together community plan is reviewed every five years to ensure that it remains reflective of community views and priorities. VT provided a submission for the current 10 year review process highlighting the relevance of volunteerism throughout the Tasmania Together goals and with some suggested changes to the way volunteer are specifically referenced in the plan.

In February 2010 Hobart City Council invited comment on their draft Social Inclusion Strategy which included their draft Social Inclusion Policy. VT provided a response to this draft Strategy.

In February 2010 Hobart City Council invited comment on their draft Positive Ageing Strategy which includes three priority areas of action – Building Social Connectedness, Being Aware of the Diversity of the Older Population, and Valuing and Empowering Older People. VT provided a response to this draft Strategy.

In October 2008 the Social Inclusion Unit (Department of Premier and Cabinet) released a Consultation Paper on A Social Inclusion Strategy for Tasmania. VT provided a detailed response to this paper in January 2009.

vt budget priority statement 2008

The most recent State Government Budget submission from VT. Key recommendations include: the creation of a Minister for Volunteering; the creation of a Volunteering Task Force; the allocation of an additional $3m for small-grant assistance to volunteer-involving organisations; the investigation of mechanisms whereby the Tasmanian Government could underwrite or otherwise support the provision of insurance protection for all Tasmanian volunteers; and support for the development of a network of volunteering ‘access point’ organisations.

The final report from a HACC-funded research project on the issue of reimbursement of volunteer’s out-of-pocket expenses. Includes recommendations for guidelines and examples of documentation.

vt response to the cost of living in tasmania interim report

VT’s response to the Tasmanian Government’s Interim Cost of Living Strategy. The strategy identifies volunteering as a community resource lever to address cost of living pressures.

vt response to volunteers, insurance and age investigation issues paper

In May 2011, the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner launched an own-motion investigation into allegations of age discrimination in the provision of insurance services to volunteers. As part of the investigation, the Commissioner released the Volunteers, Insurance and Age: Investigation Issues Paper which canvasses the issue surrounding the investigation. VT provided a response to the Issues Paper.
